Phantom quartz is a variety of quartz consisting of visible layers of overlapping crystal growths. The ghostly outline of the inner crystals is a result of when a crystal stops growing from the lack of quartz minerals present. There are rare types of Phantom Quartz that can be composed of a wide variety of minerals such as sand, clay, chlorite, actinolite, and mica or iron materials such as goethite and hematite.
